Settle
A settle is a wooden bench, usually with arms and a high back and big enough to accommodate three or four sitters. I suppose this type of furniture was taken from the word settle which means to sit at rest. Not many of us have a large enough hallway or porch for a large settle but a garden bench with comfy cushions would do the job just as nicely.
Even a simple wooden bench would be the perfect place to kick off your shoes below the hanging pegs
Go one step further and add a comfy cushion, storage baskets, a shelf or even a cupboard and you have yourself a comfy little spot to hide away all that clutter that accumulates by the front or back door.
My favourite, though, has to be this upholstered settle with a throw and cushion, nestled in a corner by a window looking out on to the garden, ready for me curl up with a book in the late afternoon sun.
