Let there be light
One of the best and free things that gives a home a feeling of calm, quiet and shelter is natural light whether that is the cool morning sun of Northern climes on a frosty morning, the heat of the midday sun kept at bay in a shady courtyard or sitting inside at a desk writing the next big novel. The warmth of a late afternoon casting long shadows over a table and the cosiness of a big comfy bed in the warm light of early evening.
I live in a very modern house, not what I was looking for when house hunting at all. I thought I would find an old building with mellow stone and I wouldn’t be able to capture that elusive look without it. I was wrong not matter what the space with the right attention to the way the light moves through the day, the choice of colour and tone for painted surfaces, the use of neutral colours and natural materials and textures, different types of window covering from voile to linen, shutters to blinds. Simply maximise the most natural elements in a space and you can achieve that sense of calm.
