And so to bed
Its that time of year when you want to put on your fleecy pyjamas and fluffy bedsocks, make a hot milky drink and take a good book to bed where you can snuggle under a big fat duvet.
Inspired by the evening chill and a conversation with my other half who wanted to know what an eiderdown was I started hunting for vintage eiderdowns.
In my mind the eiderdown was the forerunner to the duvet but way more luxurious and with satin print or plain quilted fabric sewn and stuffed with the feathers of the eider duck. The duvet on the other hand is a plain cotton cover sewn into channels filled with a variety of stuffing from hypo allergenic to silk, cotton or manmade wadding to the more expensive feathers. This is then placed inside a removal washable duvet cover. Now which one says romantic to you?
The images in today’s board remind me so much of growing up with my sister Cath, for a number of years we shared a great big double oak bed. It was layered, princess and the pea like, with cotton or flannelette sheets, I can still do a hospital corner, blankets, an eiderdown and finished with a candlewick bedspread and feather pillows. You certainly felt snug as a bug as you sank beneath the weight of the covers and the softness of the pillows.
Am digging out the lightweight duvet after this and may need hot chocolate, too warm yet for the big fat feather number another few weeks should see it on!
