The deck

Next on my list of things-to-do was the downstairs deck which we had installed way back when we moved in. Since it was built we knew we needed railings and I had intended to make sailcloth cover for the overhead beams but one summer rolled into the next and well here we are!

Let’s start with the railings. I took my engineer friend who was going to be installing them out to La Bisbal d’Emporda where they have the most fabulous reclamation places. It was here we spied these beauties. Original art nouveau ironwork off some grand house. As luck would have it, and why I knew they were perfect, four lengths of these were an exact fit pretty much for the length of wall they would be topping.

Painting was a messy and time consuming job.

Eventually I had them finished and the holes were drilled ready to bolt them in place. 

Once in situ it was down to smartening up and treating the deck, fortunately my visitors are happy to muck in and during the week of their stay, voila one stained and treated deck! Next additional struts were added to take the willow reed I’d chosen to tie in with the fencing we had used elsewhere.

The railings look fantastic, each section framing the view perfectly. 

The uprights and beams stained and treated and the willow reed in place, the deck is now a pretty cool place to while away the day. 

My engineer friend is making some wooden shutters for the French doors as well as some large planters for each end of the deck and I’m sourcing some lighting. All that is left to do then is spruce up the dining table and chairs with a fresh coat of stain and treat. Very pleased with how its looking.
